Physician, Writer, & Teacher

Dave's roots in Philadelphia are deep. He was born in Mt. Airy, raised in Wyndmoor, and lived in the city for almost his whole life. At Temple Medical School in North Philadelphia, Dave received top-flight medical training and an education in how financial insecurity and lack of educational opportunities affect people’s health. When he wasn’t seeing patients, Dave volunteered to help those struggling with addiction and led doctors to speak out against gun violence.

After training in infectious diseases and critical care, Dave worked in a trauma ICU at Brigham & Women’s Hospital and studied ethics at Harvard. When an opportunity arose at the now-closed Hahnemann University Hospital, he was thrilled to come home and has been at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital since 2012.

Dr. Dave and family

A career in medicine has taught Dave about resilience, compassion, and teamwork. During the COVID pandemic, he and his colleagues overcame unprecedented challenges by relying on these principles every day. Now, Dave wants to bring that same dedication and collaborative spirit to Congress.

Dave knows how to have the difficult conversations that need to be had to advocate for patients and families, and he's ready to do the same for the communities that make up our city.

In his writing, Dave has brought attention to issues such as gun violence, the opioid epidemic, medical misinformation, and our outdated health insurance system. He spoke out early and forcefully against RFK Jr’s appointment to head the Department of Health and Human Services and Trump’s cuts to science funding and Medicaid. His writing has appeared in  The Philadelphia Inquirer, The Hill, and MedPage Today.
